FAST: Koenigsegg CCR

FAST Issue no.3

Introduction

So, you would think Sweden is only known for producing extremely safe but dull
cars, such as Saab and Volvo. Now, think again. Christian von Koenigsegg grew
up with the dream of creating the perfect sportscar. After several years of
planning he launched the Koenigsegg project in 1993. Designer David Craaford
provided a design concept following Christian’s guidelines. The vikings
now have a car that is going to make some noise in the supercar scene: the Koenigsegg
CCR.

Design

First impressions: dynamic stance, futuristic and aggressive attitude. Now
that’s how a decent sportscar should come across. Key characteristic elements:
low to the ground, large side air intakes, smooth yet aggressive lines and big
wheels (no, not over the top 24" Giovanna wheels, those are tacky.) Moreover
the specific shade of orange used on this car is just lickable. The cockpit-like
semicircular windscreen is a nice feature and makes the CCR different from the
usual suspects. I can sense from the looks of this car that it has been crafted
with love and attention for detail. The Koenigsegg shows yet another iteration
of how to open a door — interesting concept.

Previous designs, especially early ones, of the Koenigsegg have not always
seduced me. Too boxy, too plain – while they certainly looked decent there
was something missing. Koenigsegg have fine tuned design elements in their current
(2004) CC8S and CCR models, definitively an improvement. The rear of the CCR
deserves to be mentioned seperatly: curved lines and attention to detail. The
rear hood is made of one huge part of carbonfibre, modelled to incorporate both
the avant-garde bridge-like air intake below the rear window and an integrated
wing. My only observation would be the somewhat odd gray parts (which encompass
the number plate, among others.)

Thr side profile is lacking something for me. Its all a bit front-biased. I suppose thats true of all mid-engined cars, but the Lambo’s always seem to disguise that better.

Don’t get me wrong – its still a lovely car, I’d just prefer a Murcielago or a Carerra GT. If only :-)

How about the Aston DB9 next? That really is lovely.

Ha, 242mph? That’s pitiful. If you want fast, you gotta write about the North American Eagle

Saab? Dull? Excuse me? :-) Neither Volvo or Saab are dull. Saab is one of those brands (of cars) known to be bought by people with strong personalities. European cars usually aren’t dull at all. Japanese are (Toyota i.e.).

Nice article by the way. Finally some less known cars passing the revue! :-)

Following the statement about Swedish cars being safe, this car has also passed crash tests with flying colors. In the case of the side impact tests, the door on the side of the collision was still able to be opened and no structural damage was sustained, only cosmetic damage.

PS you can test drive this car in some games such as Project Gotham Racing 2.

I suggest a Subaru Impreza WRX STi Spec-C next :) Although maybe some TVR cars would be cool to review. Perhaps the Speed 12, T 440 R or the T 350. All really nice cars. Maybe a Lotus 340R? Oh well, thats the end of my suggestions. Sorry I don’t have any comments on the Koenigsegg, its cool and all, and really fast, and good looking too.

Oh, I’d also like to point out that 0-100km/h is actually 0-62mp/h, not 0-60.

I’d say the venerable Scuby STi isn’t anywhere near the same league – don’t get me wrong; I love the Scuby (and the Evo), but it’s hardly a super car.

Personally, after having seen a Bentley Continental GT up close for the first time yesterday, I’m completely smitten with it. I’d like to see that in an upcoming edition of FAST.

(I’m also going to vote for the DB9 too – not a huge leap over the 7, but still noteworthy British super car.)

David: I knew someone would argue my statement about Volvo and Saab being dull cars. Heh. I may have exaggerated, but I still think in terms of design both Volvo and Saab are not the most sexy cars around.

Asno: As far as the STi is concerned I will have to agree with Pete. I mean it’s a great car and all, but not a supercar like Lamborghini, Porsche or this Koenigsegg.

    “Perhaps the Speed 12”

What, the car they [TVR] don’t make because the boss thought it was ludicrous?

“Im also going to vote for the DB9 too – not a huge leap over the 7”

[flabberghasted] Its a massive leap! From a Jaguary XJS-based bodge to a brand new lovely platform. The reviews I’ve seen say its better than the new 612Scaglietti and light-years ahead of the DB7. And now i’ll stop, because this is a Koinigsegg thread :-)

Comments on whether Volvo and Saab are not good looking In etc… In general When it comes to beautiful design I think all European cars and Japanese look stupid and boring. I love American cars. They really know how to make cars look wunderfully. I mean if You look at a Dodge Wiper it says all. Long live American car design!!

You actually can’t test drive the Koenigsegg CCR in PGR2. This is my favorite super car as it is absolutely beautiful. One man’s vision has turned into millions of car enthusiasts dreams. The car that can be drivin in PGR2 is the CC8S. At 655 Hp, the CC8s is still incredibly fast, but that speed is only a preview compared to the CCR. Both cars will be known around the world once production increases and they are legalized througout.

DarkBlue comment so stupid you cant drive a with a rocket on the road. Thing I dislike about the Koenigsegg is the torque not powerful enough. For me the torque should be 1010 Ib-ft, if they really wanted a supercar and it to beat anything that would come out in the market. Also the 242 mph is the speed they got upto, they still have a long way to get to the 250 mph marker, when ur driving around a course thats quite small and have hardly any straights you can hardly achieve the maximum speed of the car. Only cars that compete with the CCR are: McLAREN F1, Pagani Zonda, Bugatti Veyron, and some modified Viper or Corvette.

I love the doors on this car. Can anyone put me in touch with someone who knows if there is a way to get the door system? I have a show car that I take to all the major import car shows in the Midwest and would like to see about putting this door system on my show car. Any info would be very helpfull.

Will this car ever be in the Chicago area? Would love to see it up close and get some photos of it.

Dear Ahmed II really love those comments about beautiful American cars. You are absolutely right. American car design is the best. European and Japanese cars are so boring and outdated. Im sure within 20 years time ther wont be any cars made outside US, Only Ford, Chrysler and GM are manufacturing cars then. Im looking forward already.
